Welcome
- The International Writers Magazine - MAY 2007
Welcome to the May Edition of Hackwriters.

Quite an issue developing this month. We have features from Chile, Dominican
Republic, Mexico, Spain, Beijing, Holland, El Salvador and Brighton
beach, USA. We have memories of Kurt Vonnegut and the Rolling Stones
(35 years since Exile on Main street was launched) as well as Hassan
Al Karmi, the broadcaster.
We have fiction from everywhere. Hackwriters is nothing but global and
it's astonishing just how far away and near everyone is now. We have
reams of new stories and you could fill a whole day just reading us
and nothing else. I wonder how long people do actually spend reading
on- line or do people print them off. Never quite sure.
Right here in Portsmouth we have dissertations coming out of ears and
more big projects to come in. Panic has set in and marking begins in
earnest this week.- Joy. I have a pile floor to ceiling to get through,
so if I don't get around to updating Hacks too much, it may be because
I am slightly depressed about it all.
We have two good outcomes though, Scriptwriter Magazine in the
UK has picked up two of my screenwriting students essays on all the
pain I put them through... will be out in July. That's what I call a
learning outcome. Both are former contributors to Hacks as well. Nice
when this happens.
Another three/four weeks of marking to go. Nevermind, it happens every
year around this time. Luckily someone loves me and will stroke my head
from time to time and say 'there there...'
You
can see what our students write by logging onto BORDERLINES
at Lulu Press. It's our first published anthology of writing from the
Creative Writing Degree here at Portsmouth University so it's a start.
You can download it really cheaply too, we really make it easy for you.
A big thank you must go to Kit Thomas for helping out beyond the call
of duty with this book. I am always astonished at how much time people
will give to others and more than ever aware that fundementally there
are a lot of very good people around. Remember that if you ever get
overloaded and think the world has gone to hell. Some people care and
they are the ones who make life worth living. We have one student, who
wishes to be nameless, but is involved with the Borderline project,
who every day gives up her time to help feed and clean homeless people
in Portsmouth. Being a cynic, I am always being caught off guard by
others peoples generosity.
